PERIVALLON

PERIVALLON aims to provide an improved and comprehensive intelligence picture of organised environmental crime and develop effective and efficient tools and solutions for detecting and preventing such types of criminal activities and for assessing their environmental impact, and the insights obtained through the proposed Environmental Crime Observatory. The capacity of end users (including Police Authorities and Border Guards) will be improved by enabling them to tackle such criminal activities by providing an innovative training curriculum. Moreover, improved international cooperation will be facilitated through improved data sharing enabled by blockchain technologies, while improved regulation shaping and tuning will be supported through relevant policy recommendations. The project brings together 24 partners from 12 EU and non-EU countries – 5 Police and Border Guard Authorities, 3 authorities related to environmental protection, 6 Research/Academic institutions, 8 industry partners (including 7 SMEs), one EU Agency, and one Foundation. As such, PERIVALLON delivers a strong representation of the challenges, requirements, and tools to meet its objectives.

NarcoView

The project NarcoView aims to enhance monitoring and detection of the environmental crime, and specifically – crime of illegal dumping of chemical waste from synthetic drugs production. It is accomplished by gathering and processing intelligence through the use of remote sensing, data science and machine learning algorithms, which in turn is integrated in a web-based platform for law enforcement agencies. By utilizing data-driven techniques, the prototype platform allows to prioritize and inspect areas in a more efficient way. Additionally, the drone-based remote sensing technology provides enriched data about the crime scene without its contamination. Research on effective integration of a developed tool in the workflow of the law enforcement agencies and usability of the generated intelligence in prosecution is also part of the project objectives.

The project NarcoView is part of the call on “The operational cooperation in the fight against environmental crime” by the Internal Security Fund – Police (ISF-P). The project is led by the National Police Netherlands and Saxion University of Applied Sciences, with a consortium comprised of several non-profit and governmental organizations from The Netherlands, Belgium and Bulgaria.

RITHMS

The RITHMS project (Research, Intelligence and Technology for Heritage and Market Security) intends to boost the operational capacity of Police and Customs/Border Authorities in addressing the increasingly organised and poly-criminal nature of trafficking in cultural goods through research, technological innovation, outreach and training. Illicit trade in cultural heritage has progressed from a local phenomenon limited to the initiative of a few individuals to a highly remunerative source of income for criminal organisations and terrorist groups that have taken advantage of the opportunities offered by the web and social media to further expand an already flourishing market. Against this background, RITHMS proposes an interdisciplinary approach made necessary by the transnational character of this crime and its links to other criminal networks.
